Minnesota Library Summer Reading Visit Costs

We tried to find funds to underwrite a library summer visit tour but were unsuccessful. Knowing how stressed library budgets have become, yet trying to find an honorarium that repays an author’s travel and loss of studio time has been challenging. Debra Frasier will offer the following rates only through the summer of 2008, with most visits scheduled in June and early July. Her usual fee is $600.00 for a library visit, but this summer’s rates will be discounted as follows:

All visits include one of the three presentation offerings, the selection to be made by the participating libraries. A book signing can be offered after any of the presentations, or book mark autographing if selling books is not an option.

Minnesota Library Summer Reading Visit Costs

Metro Library visits requiring no overnight stay: $350.00

Libraries Outside the Metro Area requiring travel and overnight stay: $400.00, plus accommodation at hotel. This cost can be shared if more than one library is served in a single day. A gas fee will be calculated after each trip and submitted, amount depending on market value during the summer months. (i.e.: in an effort to limit travel costs, each library will be charged only for the gas used in getting to their library.)

Touring schedule: Requests will be accepted until March 1, 2008, for visits in June and early July of 2008. After March 1 all requests will be reviewed with the MELSA office for feasibility of distance, time and date. As many libraries as can be accommodated will be scheduled.

“I consider being selected as Minnesota’s Summer Reading illustrator a great honor, and will try to visit as many libraries as I can. Please understand that closing my studio for six weeks to travel the state is a serious commitment but together I want to inspire as many people as we can about the book, writing, how pictures tell stories, while encouraging that creative spark by example and role modeling for young people. I look forward to working together during this Summer Reading season.”  —Debra Frasier

Other Events: Kim Faurot from Saint Paul Public Library has a marvelous version of A Birthday Cake Is No Ordinary Cake, told with props and her usual storytelling magic. It is a delightful performance and she is sometimes available for libraries hosting Debra in a joint presentation. Her 25 minute performance is $200.00, within the Metro Area. Contact Debra at www.debrafrasier.com if this addition is of interest.

Note that numerous craft activities to accompany Debra’s books can be found at www.debrafrasier.com. Debra Frasier’s website also includes a set of download sheets of props to color or make in felt to create your own prop-storytelling version of A Birthday Cake Is No Ordinary Cake, especially created with Kim, LibrarySparks Magazine, and Debra Frasier.
